KENTOO Interview: From R-Type to Pop Stickers — A Japanese Designer's Journey

KENTOO (ケントー), based in Ishikawa, Japan, is one of Japan's most distinctive contemporary pop illustrators. His signature 'DO THE POP!' aesthetic — a vibrant fusion of American rock-cartoon energy and Japanese kawaii sensibility — has shaped his career across video games, illustration, and now, FACTO's exclusive sticker collection.

From R-Type to Pop Illustration

KENTOO's career began in 1992 at Irem Software Engineering, where he created iconic character designs for legendary Japanese video games including:

  • R-Type Δ — A landmark in Japanese shoot-em-up game design
  • R-Type Final — The series' celebrated conclusion
  • Disaster Report (Zettai Zetsumei Toshi) — Survival drama that defined a genre
  • Ponkotsu Roman Daikatsugeki: Bumpy Trot — Whimsical Japanese action-adventure

These titles defined a generation of Japanese gaming aesthetics — bold, character-driven, and unafraid to mix Western influences with distinctly Japanese sensibilities. In 2005, KENTOO went freelance, expanding his practice into illustration, character design, and art direction across fashion, advertising, and entertainment industries worldwide.

The "DO THE POP!" Philosophy

What sets KENTOO apart is his signature aesthetic: 'DO THE POP!'. It's not just a style — it's a manifesto. Each illustration combines three core elements:

  • American rock-cartoon energy — Bold linework, retro pop palettes, and pure attitude
  • Japanese kawaii sensibility — Cute charm, expressive faces, and playful storytelling
  • Pin-up tradition — Confident, sexy yet sophisticated character work

The result? Illustrations that feel both nostalgic and fresh, both Western and unmistakably Japanese — the perfect entry point for international fans into the world of Japanese pop art.
